Loose Construction
Recruiting is weird.
I don't need to rehash the ways in which it is weird, because if you're reading a college football blog, you are deeply familiar with the myriad ways in which it is but, needless to say, it is also the lifeblood of a program. Recruit or die.
But what struck me in this recruiting season is that Jim Harbaugh is Alexander Hamilton-esque.
Allow me to explain, via the unlikely for me route of musical theater (oh and I'm sorry Jane).
As many of you know, Hamilton is the breakout musical of the 2015-16 Broadway season. Created by MacArthur Genius Grant winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical tells the story of Revolutionary America through the eyes of future Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton went from a penniless immigrant from Nevis to what is now Columbia University to George Washington's right-hand man in the Continental Army to delegate to the Constitutional Convention to Secretary of the Treasury to his death in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr. But what Miranda centers on in his take on Hamilton is seen in the Act I closing number, "Non-Stop."
"How to account for his rise to the top?
Maaaaan, the man is
Non-stop!"
We know Harbaugh is a competitor. We know that Harbaugh believes in the notion that if we're keeping score, if we're competing, then why not try to win. Yes, you will ruffle some feathers along the way, you're going to make some enemies, but Harbaugh has zero fear about that. In fact, what upsets Harbaugh's competitors is that he is non-stop. He makes them work harder. He forces them out of their comfort zone. Harbaugh has sleepovers at recruit's houses to maximize his in-home visit time? That just makes good sense. But that also means other coaches have to decide if they want to do it. Which brings me to another point.
One of the nuances that Hamilton can't convey readily is that Hamilton firmly believed in "loose construction" of the Constitution. The document that he helped to explain to the American people in the Federalist Papers, he felt that as long as the Constitution did not expressly forbid him from doing something and the ends were legal and Constitutional, he could choose the non-expressly forbidden means by which to arrive at the end. I feel like Jim Harbaugh looks at the NCAA rulebook the same way. Does the NCAA say we CAN'T do this? A rulebook and interpretive guide massive in size and scope to account for this exact kind of behavior; and yet, still Coach Harbaugh continues to find ways around it. Whether it is satellite camps, the Sincerely Yours in Football camp, the Signing of the Stars event, recruit sleepovers, all of these things are perfectly within the rules, Harbaugh was just crazy enough to say, why not? The competition hates this kind of thing, because it forces them to respond, and they know they don't have the motor to do it. The man is non-stop. Jim Harbaugh is boundless energy, he's Tigger in khaki pants and a sharp light blue pullover sweater. He plays to win all the time and he doesn't really care whose feelings get hurt in the process. It's a meritocracy, and he has the exact right school and fanbase to sell that notion.
The thing is, he won't have to do this for very long. If he can convert this highly touted recruiting class into the expected results on the field, the results that Ohio State and Michigan State used this cycle to recruit their players (and, by the way, still the single best argument you can make in recruiting, winning and winning consistently), then he won't need stunts. But for now, he is happy to leverage your curiosity into Harbaugh's next bold gamble, next outspoken moment, next unfiltered utterance, and use the media churn to keep the Michigan name in front of recruits.
Harbaugh may seem like to some that he assumes he is the smartest in the room (well, he went to Michigan, we sometimes do that. It happens.) Every proclamation gives ammunition to his enemies. But history has his eyes on him, and he's not throwing away his shot. Just you wait.
And if you don't know, now you know, Victors.

Nick Saban's Girlfriend Experience
I like that Alabama is the first game of the 2012 season because we can spend eight months taunting them in a way that we would never be able to taunt Western Michigan.
Nick Saban is in the news again, with recruit Landon Collins's mother accusing Saban of offering her son's girlfriend a job in order to entice him to choose Alabama over LSU (fixed). Promising a recruit's girlfriend a job is apparently permissible in football, but not in basketball.
In honor of his new recruiting experience, we present a new poster of Nick Saban:
This may be the first time in internet history that Sasha Grey has been photoshopped out of a picture. If you came here looking for pictures of Sasha Grey, please consult every other website everywhere.

Mr. Etiquette's guide to surviving a boring meeting
Dear Mr. Etiquette,
I recently had to travel one and a half hours from home to give a big speech at a big meeting. After giving my talk, I had to listen to a gentleman with intellectual and affiliational deficiencies give an incredibly boring speech. After listening to this half-wit ramble on for a few minutes, I stood up and ordered him to sit down and shut up. Under further review, I feel this may not have been the best course of action. How should I have handled this situation?
Sincerely,
Mike D., East Lansing, Mich.
Gentle listener to the gentle reader who is gently reading this column to you,
Meetings are a fact of life in the business world, and, try as we might, we will never be able to give complete attention to every speaker at every meeting. While ideally a proper businessperson would never "tune out" a speaker, etiquette acknowledges that sometimes our concentration lapses and we have no choice but to do so. In this situation, it is paramount that we let the meeting proceed as though we were giving our undivided attention. Therefore, while we may cope with a dull or uninteresting meeting in many different ways, the best way to deal with such a situation is to be neither obtrusive nor douchey.
Mr. Etiquette has prepared a chart of possible responses to a dull meeting that he hopes you will find useful. As you will no doubt be able to determine from the chart, your response to the situation was indeed less than ideal.
The lower-left icon of this chart is slightly unsatisfactory as it presumes that the individual attempting to cope with a boring meeting is attracted to female brunettes instead of male brunets. Mrs. Etiquette suggests, as a service to my gentle readers who are so inclined, that this column link to these pictures of Kit Harington so that they may modify the chart to their satisfaction.
Bearably yours,
Mr. Etiquette

MNC suggestion
In case you were on the fence about who to root for tonight, remember how far "conference pride" goes from their side:
Cheering for the Buckeyes means wanting all those people to be really happy again. Though we've had to grow accustomed to it, OSU woofing is far worse than SEC woofing. Not to mention the edge in recruiting this would get them.
An OSU win can only hurt Michigan. Geaux Tigers.

Ron Zook "Facts"
As some of you may know, I am, in my spare time, a frequent commenter on Deadspin. Well, today's post about Will's trip to the Michigan/Illinois tilt this weekend had one of my favorite comments ever (following up on the comments on Ron Zook's ski boat:
"Ron Zook doesn't fish. He merely recruits fish into the boat."
This lead Geoff and I into a Chuck Norris Facts style battle about Ron Zook facts:
Geoff: "Ron Zook once sold an icemaker to an emperor penguin."
Craig: "Ron Zook out text messaged Beth Ann from the Cingular commercial. Her BFF Jill was deeply impressed by the Zooker and will be lining up at long snapper for the Illini next season."
Geoff: "Ron Zook isn't allowed in convents...anymore."
Craig: "Ron Zook originated the Jedi Mind Trick."
Geoff: "Ron Zook is the foremost pork wholesaler in Jerusalem."
Craig: "The Pentagon's secret plan for meeting U.S. Army recruiting quotas this year revolved heavily around Ron Zook."
Geoff: ""Ron Zook made $16M last year in consulting fees with Madison Ave. His skill is marketing, but college football? That's his passion.""
Craig: "Some Jehovah's Witnesses came to Ron Zook's door one day. They're now on the Illini Scout Team."
So, to make this interactive, and to give us some actual content, please post your own Ron Zook "Facts" in the comments. The man is a recruiting legend, let the legend be told in song and story.
