Occasionally after the marching band postgame show (you
do stay for the postgame show, don't you?), the band will make a formation spelling out someone's name and just stand there for a few seconds. Anyone can do this; for a
$10,000 donation, you will receive a photograph of the band spelling your name out on the field.

But wait! There aren't that many fans in the stadium after the game is done.
The photo has to be combined with a stock image of a full stadium to give the appearance that it was taken during halftime. The lesson here: Save MMB photography staff work by staying for the postgame show.

It's amazing to see how many MMB members there are between the number on the field and the number in the stands in the final image!
I had no idea they did the photoshopping... What about games where the picture is taken after dark, a la MSU in '04 and, i think, a few other games that year? Do they have evening stock footage, too? The shadows would pretty much make anything with a light sky unbelievable.
I was wondering that too. He has a "Tributes" section up, and it looks like the '04 photo is up there untouched. Fortunately it was for the Irwins, who have several others already.
I don't think we even do formations for the Irwins anymore... They've sponsored shows for which we've had no postgame set. I mean, they've got their name in every possible permutation, first and last... What's next- starting to spell out War and Peace, word by word?
