New Drum Major

Congratulations to David Hines, your 2009-2010 MMB Drum Major. David, a euphonium, is a junior this year in Mechanical Engineering. He was selected over other finalists Rich Main (trumpet) and Sarah Zelenak (euph). Here's some video of David's audition:

Sarah and David are/were both Euphs, not Tubas. At least that was the case when I graduated last year.

That was the case this year as well-Sarah and David both play euphonium.

Whoops, my bad. I was jumping through the section rosters on the MMB site and forgot which one I clicked on.

My brother sent this to me. Congratulations, David! But please work on catching the baton -- you were 2 for 5 in the video, and you know it's bad luck if the drum major drops the baton after tossing it thru the uprights...

When did they start choosing the DMs in the spring? And who picks the DM now? It used to be chosen by the band members during band week.

It's been done this way at least since 1999. I think there's a lot more emphasis on offseason work these days, so they want the drum major already installed. Band members still vote on it, but I don't know if theirs are the only votes that count.

My first year in band was '95 and we voted on the DM during band week. Then that following spring of '96 is when we started voting for the next year's DM.

Shouldn't we have seen some highstepping from each of the candidates? i always thought the best drum majors were the ones who could throw their head back as they high stepped without losing their hat.

This was just a portion of the audition. The DM audition consists of multiple parts, including the strut you mention. This video is just the baton routine portion.
