I like the examples of connecting college players to their past.

Love reading the HSR - get more knowledge and information, better analysis, and more marching band coverage than the Daily ever attempted. Phil Hubbard, Glen Rice, Bill Buntin, and Rudy Tomjanovich's jerseys are all "honored," but not "retired." I need to double check on that, but I'm almost certain that's the truth. Which in itself is interesting.Aramhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06485364695469343249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35971090.post-14744223852885301442008-05-09T13:45:00.000-04:002008-05-09T13:45:00.000-04:00Looking around a few comparable programs that list...Looking around a few comparable programs that listed info about retired numbers, here's what I came up with:

Notre Dame: 0
Ohio State: 7, and it seems like most of them (if not all) were retired in the past decade or so.
USC: At least the 7 for their Heisman winners.
UCLA: 8
Iowa: 2

I've also heard about the Notre Dame practice that Craig mentioned, and I think that's cool. I didn't see anything else about traditions involving the actual numbers.

I think MSU basketball has banners up to honor certain former players, but not retired numbersGeoffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09461267960136260783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35971090.post-75856707284181187622008-05-09T10:21:00.000-04:002008-05-09T10:21:00.000-04:00Alex,I hate to use them as an example, but I belie...Alex,

I hate to use them as an example, but I believe that Notre Dame actually posts the previous wearers of one's number in the back of the locker to connect the past to the present. I've always liked that idea, even if it's ND.

I know that many colleges retire the jersey, but not the number, and I could live with that, if we wanted to honor players individually. North Carolina basketball has very specific requirements for how players are honored based on awards they win.

Think about it thought, Michigan hockey doesn't have any retired numbers, that I am aware of. The fact that Brendan Morrison wore the same number as Red Berenson is a great connection in my mind.

Great article GZ.Craig Barkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17397826983297392993noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35971090.post-25116700018545351982008-05-09T10:02:00.000-04:002008-05-09T10:02:00.000-04:00I wonder if keeping numbers around is a norm acros...I wonder if keeping numbers around is a norm across colleges, and that they all build this kind of tradition, or whether Michigan's emphasis on tradition over the individual quashes any real thoughts about number retirement, no matter how good the player is.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13087173245411550769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35971090.post-47431996557652360182008-05-09T08:30:00.000-04:002008-05-09T08:30:00.000-04:00The link is fixed now.
